“The little things? The little moments? They aren’t little” – Jon Kabat-Zinn

Think about your life – all the BIG moments we anticipate – the trip to Disneyland, or Hawaii, or fill in the blank. How about the first day of school, the last day of school – your graduation? Or the big party you planned, or your birthday dinner? Are these the moments that are your best, that are your favourite? Or, is it the unexpected day at the beach with your best friend, the impromptu hang out at your friends place, the sunset you didn’t expect, the sleep in that you really needed, the rolling on the floor laughter that came unexpectedly, the great talk you had with your mom – or dad – or fill in the blank.

It has taken me more time that I like to admit to realize that it is the everyday, unexpected moments that make up the best of our life. I cannot count how many times I have wished time away, waiting for that “special” moment only to realize that I am wishing away all the special moments that happen unexpectedly, each and every day.

As a teacher – and a student, it seems we are always waiting for winter break, spring break, summer holidays. The crazy thing is, I love my job – I love hanging out with kids everyday; being a life long learner and encouraging students to be the same. I love to challenge my students minds and love to encourage them to think independently. If I love my job so much, why am I always waiting for the next break?

Why do we wish away time, even when life is good now? Do you do this?
